John Rider & Mehitable Crowell Family
John Rider and Mehitable Crowell were born and raised in Yarmouth. They married there in 1713 but soon after moved to the new town of Chatham. Like many, they sought new opportunities and land. This was a chance to establish their own life. They had a large family of 9 children and were a respected family. John was selected to serve in several different town jobs from Constable to carpenter building the new Meeting House. In 1765 an outbreak of smallpox struck Chatham. Over the next few years over 15 members of John's extended family died including John & Mehitable.
