Theodore Shepherd & Eliza Jane Cox Family
Theodore Shepherd We do not yet have a picture of Eliza J. Cox
This page is devoted to all of the documents and records collected for the Theodore Shepherd family. Theo was born in 1842 to Dr. William A Shepherd and his wife Frances Rogers. He had 2 brothers and a sister who all lived in Highland County, Ohio where his father had a medical practice. Theo may have been a trial for his parents in his choice of vocation. One brother was a doctor and the other was a lawyer. Theo chose to be a farmer (and later merchant). When he was 18 years old he married 17 year old Eliza J. Cox on the day before Christmas in 1859 and they moved to a farm on rented land. They had 4 children and eventually followed the lead of son William and migrated to Wabaunsee County, Kansas. By all accounts Theo and his "Lida" (his name for Eliza J.) were happy and prosperous. The newspapers referred to him as a "merchant prince". One of his grandaughters, Olive Gladys Shepherd, remembered he always drank coffee from a special cup which protected his flowing handlebar mustache. As the years advanced, some of his family went to Missouri for several years but Theo and Lida remained in Kansas. Lida's health declined and she died of pneumonia in 1911. Theo was devastated and eventually moved in with his son Charles A. Shepherd. Theo died on 27 Dec 1915 which was just days after what would have been his 56th wedding anniversary. In his despondency, he took his own life at the age of 74. Both he and his beloved Lida are buried in the Wilmington Cemetery. There are no grave markers.
